Volunteer Opportunities

Across the City of Cambridge there are many organisations and groups that are looking for people to get involved.  Here are some current opportunities:

MACMAC - 'The Cambridge Money Advice Centre is looking for people who would be interested in becoming volunteer debt advisers, especially those who are available during the day. Training courses are run by Community Money Advice for which there is a charge which we ask advisors to meet - we then provide continued support for you and you can decide how much time you would like to commit. Completing the training does not commit you to being an adviser.

If you are interested, please get in touch on 01223 727455 or office@mac-cambridge.org.uk'

jnsJimmy's Night Shelter is heavily dependant on a wonderful volunteer team who support staff, serve meals, clear up, help make our guests comfortable and generally keep everything running smoothly.

We are currently having a hard time filling volunteer shifts. Would you like to try out a shift or two, to both help us out and to give you a greater insight into the work of Jimmy’s? And of course we’d be delighted if you were able to join us on a more permanent basis, working with us in a way that’s convenient to you: weekly, fortnightly or monthly turns.

We operate four shifts:

Breakfast (uncooked), 7.30am – 10.00am: serve cereal, keep tea & coffee etc topped up, clear up used dishes, help with bed making

Breakfast (cooked), 7.30am – 10.00am: provide cooked breakfast of (usually) eggs, sausages, bacon, beans etc, keep tea & coffee etc topped up, clear up used dishes

Evenings, 6.30pm – 9.30pm: serve evening meals, clean kitchen, collect used crockery, help as needed eg laundry

Overnights, 10.00pm – 7.00am: working with one project worker, some cleaning and tidying, followed by sleep on our comfy sofa (to be woken in an emergency).

Occasionally, if the overnight volunteer is unwell and calls in sick, we also need a team of reserves that can be called upon at short notice. It is possible to sleep on the shift, and the shelter is well protected with CCTV, professional procedures and boundaries.

If you can help (and are over 18 years of age), please ring 01223 576085 or email
